For 20 years, “task-oriented writing” has been all the rage in technical communication. But having studied and used task-oriented writing throughout my career, I came to realize that even so-called “task-oriented” help content can leave users flailing, unable to find a clear path through a product. However, unlike task orientation, my “Users Want Widgets” method helps writers develop content that is uncluttered, straightforward, and solution-oriented.
